Why I love Hong Kong

I never, ever get yelled at by construction workers in Hong Kong. We have the politest, most respectful construction workers in the world. They're all feminists, I'm sure of it.

Although to balance that viewpoint, I must recall to you all the one time my chest was oggled on the MTR. I complained about it to my brother, who was standing next to me at the time, and he just sighed and said "He probably had a bad day, L, just let it go." - WHEN did 17 year olds become so jaded about the world may I ask? Male honor? Common Chivalry!?!?!?

Hey there! I'm so glad you have a blog. w00t!

I'm not sure that I'd call many people in Hong Kong feminists. I am repeatedly surprised when the relations between the sexes seems straight out of 1950s USA. Hong Kong's reaction to the whole Edison Chen scandal really shed light on it. The fact that it was such a huge deal for every single person in HK—from grandmothers to pre-teens—shows a conservative streak. Edison didn't do anything that immoral. What's so wrong about taking "intimate" photos of willing girlfriends for one's private use. He goes on-tour; he might need something to look at. Men are visual, right?
And then there's this double-standard I see among my students about how they treat Gillian versus Edison. Some of my students are willing to forgive Edison—after all, he's only male. But none of students are willing to forgive Gillian. Her career is even deader than Edison's, and I think only because she's a woman.

I do agree with you, Chris. I think I was being a little bit vaguely facetious.

I don't really think that construction workers are feminists. And I don't really love Hong Kong. I think I'm mixed on both those issues.

On the other hand, my younger brother has been yelled at by Construction worker. And, my brother is pretty hot. Dare I hope for the openly gay construction worker movement driving liberal thought regarding sexual practices and preferences in this, our humble city?
